doors closing

We’ve traveled so far together, across different lines and cities.
Through train delays and turbulent rides
But then you switched trains without me
Headed to another line,
Another city

I got off and waited by the tracks until you came back, as trains oft do.
In time, our stations aligned and we continued, side by side
But it was time for you to change again
Headed to another line,
Another city

Other trains and passengers pass me by, doors opening,
Passengers settling in excited and wide-eyed
But I let the doors close and the train departs
Headed to another line,
Another city

I would’ve ridden with you forever, to the end of the line.
I wish you could have kept the seat next to me occupied
But you have places yet to go and people still to meet
You’re not ready for the same line,
Same city

I need to catch my own train now
Because I also have places I want to go to and people I should meet.
As I go to find my own lines and my own cities
I take a deep breath as I step off the platform, doors closing,
And settle into my seat.
